Brainspotting

Brainspotting provides a powerful approach for those seeking to heal from trauma, anxiety, and emotional blocks. Ideal for those who feel stuck or overwhelmed, it helps release deep-seated tension and fosters lasting emotional relief.

Brainspotting

Experience deep emotional healing and trauma release with our Brainspotting therapy, a focused technique that uses targeted eye positions to uncover and resolve hidden emotional blocks.

What is Brainspotting?

Brainspotting is a powerful, focused therapeutic technique that helps you access and release emotional and physical pain stored in the brain and body. Developed by Dr. David Grand in 2003, Brainspotting is grounded in neuroscience and leverages the brain's innate capacity to process trauma through targeted eye positioning. By identifying specific eye positions, known as "brainspots," this method taps into the brain's subcortical regions, including the limbic system and brainstem, where trauma and emotional distress are often stored.

How Does it Work?

During a Brainspotting session, a therapist guides your gaze to targeted points in your visual field while you focus on specific feelings, memories, or bodily sensations. This process activates the brain's subcortical areas, bypassing the neocortex and accessing the deeper, emotion-centered regions where trauma can be held. Studies suggest that Brainspotting engages the amygdala, hippocampus, and thalamus, facilitating the processing of traumatic memories in a way similar to EMDR but with more emphasis on eye position as a diagnostic tool (Hilton, 2017; Grand, 2013).

Brainspotting is rooted in the concept of bilateral stimulation and eye movement as mechanisms for accessing traumatic memories. According to Grand (2013), the therapeutic process is thought to activate the brain’s natural self-scanning and healing abilities, effectively processing unresolved emotional content. Neuroimaging studies indicate that focusing on a brainspot activates regions such as the midbrain, which is involved in visual tracking and emotional processing. Additionally, brainspotting has been shown to promote neural integration and emotional regulation by connecting subcortical processing with higher cortical functions.

What to Expect in a Session

Each Brainspotting session is tailored to your unique needs. Therapists may incorporate grounding techniques, mindfulness practices, and body awareness to support the healing process. During the session, you will be guided to focus on a specific brainspot while maintaining awareness of bodily sensations and emotions. Sessions are conducted in a calm, supportive space where you are encouraged to process at your own pace, allowing the brain to naturally release stored emotional content.

Benefits of Brainspotting

Brainspotting offers a range of therapeutic benefits, including:

  • Trauma Processing: Facilitates the release of deeply stored traumatic memories that may not be accessible through traditional talk therapy.

  • Emotional Regulation: Helps to calm the nervous system and reduce symptoms of anxiety and panic.

  • Physical Healing: Addresses chronic pain and physical tension linked to unresolved emotional trauma.

  • Enhanced Self-Awareness: Promotes deeper connections with one’s inner experiences and bodily sensations.

  • Improved Performance: Assists in breaking through creative, athletic, or academic blocks by resolving underlying emotional barriers.

  • Integration and Balance: Supports the integration of left and right brain functions, fostering emotional balance and cognitive clarity.

Who can Benefit?

Brainspotting is particularly beneficial for individuals experiencing:

  • Unresolved trauma or PTSD

  • Anxiety and depression

  • Chronic pain or physical tension

  • Emotional numbness or feeling "stuck"

  • Performance blocks in sports, arts, or work

  • Dissociation or disconnection from the body
